Gregory University Uturu Graduates Over 400 Scholars, Confers Honorary Degrees at 10th Convocation

Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, held its 10th Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, December 13, 2025 celebrating a decade of excellence in the institution’s convocation history.
The ceremony, which took place at the Goodluck Jonathan Auditorium, attracted a galaxy of distinguished personalities who witnessed the graduation of a new cohort of scholars. A total of 410 graduands were awarded first degrees, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees.
The 10th Convocation Ceremony also featured the conferment of honorary degrees on notable individuals in recognition of their contributions to leadership, public service, and community development in Nigeria and beyond.
The awardees include the Chairman of the Abia State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty, Eze Linus Ntoh Mbah, who was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Hospitality and Tourism Management. Former Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and renowned industrialist, Mr. Okenze Sylvester Obinna, were each awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Business Administration.
The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Eme Uche, in his goodwill message congratulated members of the university community and commended Gregory University for its consistent participation in state initiatives. He cited the university’s outstanding performance at the Abia State Tertiary Education Sports Fiesta, where it emerged as the best-performing private institution among sixteen participating tertiary institutions.
He further reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for tertiary institutions to thrive through transparent policies, infrastructural development, and constructive engagement.
In his fatherly charge to the graduates, the Founder and Proprietor, Prof. Gregory Ibe, urged them to confront the numerous challenges facing the nation with courage by applying the knowledge and skills acquired during their time at the university.
Represented by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Augustine Uwakwe, he reflected on the institution’s journey from inception through incubation to implementation, emphasizing his commitment to investing in an educational system that produces world-class leaders, thinkers, and change-makers.
Admitting the graduands to their respective degrees, the Chancellor, Gregory Okechukwu Ibe, also represented by Prof. Augustine Uwakwe, described the 10th Convocation as a celebration of a bold dream realized. He noted that since its establishment in 2012, Gregory University has expanded its academic programmes, upgraded its laboratories, strengthened partnerships with industry and global institutions, and it’s on a mission to lead the way in research in Nigeria and beyond through the establishment of a leading research and innovation hub in Abuja, the Innov8 Hub.
In her address, the Vice-Chancellor of Gregory University, Prof. Cele Njoku, congratulated the graduands and highlighted their remarkable achievements, including strong performances in professional examinations across disciplines such as Allied Health Sciences, Medicine, Law, Engineering, Basic Medical Sciences, and Education.
She also underscored key innovations of the institution, including the Gregory University Institute of Foreign Languages, while emphasizing the university’s focus on state-of-the-art facilities, innovation, and the acquisition of entrepreneurial skills.
Representing the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, Mr. Chukwuemeka Offor commended Gregory University Uturu, for its significant strides in teaching, research, and community service. He assured the institution of the Commission’s continued support and encouraged the graduates to uphold the values and knowledge acquired as worthy ambassadors of the university and the nation.
Out of the over 400 graduands produced by the university, Onyechere Chijindum Yadirichukwu of the Department of Accounting emerged as the Overall Best Graduate with an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.91. In his valedictory speech, he expressed gratitude to the lecturers and other members of staff for their commitment, dedication, and support. He also congratulated his fellow graduands, the Class of 2025, and emphasized the importance of education, adding that “the true purpose of education is to build the Nigeria we want.”
Amid other goodwill messages from dignitaries and guests, graduates from the university’s 13 colleges expressed joy at the successful completion of their studies and are optimistic about the next phase of their lives, having been well equipped with both practical and theoretical knowledge.

Gregory University Optometry Department Conducts Free Eye Screening Test

The Department of Optometry of Gregory University, organized a comprehensive free eye test  for scholars and staff as part of its commitment to promoting eye health and preventing avoidable vision problems within the university community and beyond. 
The exercise, held at the university’s Eye Clinic, on Thursday, 27th November, 2025. It featured a full range of routine examinations, including visual Acuity assessment, Refraction tests, External Examination and general eye health evaluations.
Final-year optometry scholars, under the supervision of certified lecturers and clinicians, attended to participants using modern diagnostic tools to ensure accurate assessments.
The Head of Department Dr. Obialo Osigwe, in his statement expressed that the outreach was designed to encourage early detection of eye conditions and to remind the university community of the importance of regular eye check-ups. He noted that many vision-related issues can be prevented or managed effectively when discovered early.
Scholars and staff turned out in good numbers, commending the department for the initiative. Some beneficiaries described the exercise as timely, especially given the increasing strain on the eyes due to prolonged screen time and academic activities.
The department assured that similar clinics would be organized periodically to sustain awareness and help members of the university maintain good eye health. The successful exercise ended with participants receiving professional advice, prescriptions where necessary, and recommendations for further treatment.
The eye clinic stands as another milestone in the department’s ongoing efforts to combine academic training with community service, while fostering a healthier university environment.

Gregory University College of Law Visits Achara Secondary School, Donates Items To Promote Learning

A team of scholars from the College of Law, Law Clinic Unit, Gregory University Uturu (GUU), with the continued sponsorship and support of Talkcounsel, a leading provider of legal services carried out an high-impact outreach at Achara Secondary School in Uturu, Abia State on Tuesday, 25th November 2025.
The outreach, which was aimed at sensitizing students on human rights, and responsible digital citizenship, also featured the donation of desktop computers, exercise books, and other essential learning materials.
The Director of the Law Clinic, Dr. Eluchie Chike Happiness, and Barrister Raymond Uche, while speaking at the event, enlightened the students on their human rights and provided counselling and support, thereby promoting human rights education.
Addressing the students, one of the law scholars, Amarachi Praise, spoke on Child’s Rights and emphasized the importance of knowing their fundamental rights, especially in a society where young people often fall victim to exploitation, violence, bullying, and unlawful treatment due to a lack of awareness.
During an interactive session, Uchegbu Joshua, among others, highlighted the dangers of social media abuse, cautioning students against cyberbullying, sharing harmful content, online fraud, and the long-term consequences of negative digital footprints . They encouraged the students to embrace the positive use of technology for learning, creativity, and self-improvement.
The school principal, Mrs. R. N. Uwakwe, alongside the teachers and students of Achara Secondary School, expressed gratitude for the donations.
Mrs. Uwakwe specially thanked the team, stating that the contributions would go a long way in supporting the students’ academic needs, describing the visit as timely and transformative. She commended the Founder, Chancellor, Dean of the Law College, Director of the Law Clinic, lecturers, staff, and scholars for their commitment to youth development and urged other institutions to emulate the initiative.

Gregory University To Participate In The Abia State Tertiary Institutions Game; Receives Torch Of Excellence

Gregory University Uturu has hosted representatives of the Abia State Tertiary Institution Sports Fiesta Team as they embarked on their Torch of Peace and Unity tour ahead of the maiden edition of the sports competition.
The sporting event, scheduled to commence on November 25, 2025 and run through November 29, 2025, kicked off with a torch-lighting ceremony to all participating Institutions . The torch was presented at Gregory University Uturu on November 18, 2025.
The Vice-Chancellor of Gregory University, Prof. Cele Njoku, warmly received the team, stating that the University is proud to be part of the event. She encouraged scholars to demonstrate outstanding sportsmanship while at the event.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Tertiary Education, Dr. Emeka Eyiazu, emphasized the importance of sports, especially among young people. He noted that the government, in line with its youth empowerment programme, is excited to nurture and support emerging talents through these games for future national and international competitions.
In his address, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Uwaoma Uche, expressed delight while receiving the fiesta torch. He assured the organizers of the University’s full participation in all scheduled sporting activities, and urge the scholars to strive to bring home the trophy.
Speaking on behalf of the scholars, the Scholars Union Government (SUG) President, Machenry Jacobs, reaffirmed the scholars’ readiness to compete, win the trophy, and uphold exemplary sportsmanship throughout the event.

Gregory University Strengthens Workforce Through Human Capital Development Workshop

In preparation for the Harmattan Semester, which marks the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year, the Scholars Affairs Unit of Gregory University Uturu held a one-day training session for supervisors and porters on Human Capital Development on October 10, 2025.
According to the Director of Training and Linkages, A’Prof. Sampson Nzeribe, the training was designed to equip porters and supervisors with new skills aimed at promoting excellence in humanitarian services and positively influencing lives within the university and beyond.
A’Prof. Nzeribe emphasized that a good society is built by well-trained individuals, especially during their formative years. He urged members of the Scholars Affairs Unit to ensure that scholars fully maximize their time at the university for a better present and future.
The lead facilitator, Mr. Gilbert Ekeh, discussed topics including fire and environmental safety, health and human safety, and advised against negative behaviours such as bullying, stealing, and drug abuse.
Dr. Okpuisi Thomas, Associate Dean of Scholars Affairs, encouraged scholars to prioritize their studies and not be distracted by the internet. He also guided them on the “whys” and “hows” of scholars’ lives on campus, as well as the “dos and don’ts”.
The event featured group discussions, which provided participants ample opportunity to brainstorm, deliberate, and develop new working methods and attitudes toward improving hostel management and scholar relations.

HOD of Optometry, Gregory University Uturu Honoured for Outstanding Contribution at 2025 World Sight Day Symposium

The head of the Department of Optometry, Gregory University Uturu, Dr. Obialo Osigwe, has been honoured with an Award of excellence and commended by the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau (AEHMB) for his outstanding contribution to the 2025 World Sight Day Symposium held on October 9.
In an official letter of appreciation, AEHMB Administrator, Dr. Mrs. Betty Emeka-Obasi, lauded Dr. Osigwe for his impactful role as a discussant during the event. According to the statement, his expert insights significantly shaped the conversation around this year’s theme, shedding light on pressing vision health challenges across the state.
“Your insightful dialogue engaged attendees, fostering actionable solutions and laying a strong foundation for progress across our 17 Local Government Areas,” the letter read in part.
The Bureau noted that Dr. Osigwe’s contributions not only enriched the symposium but also aligned closely with its ongoing mission to improve eye health outcomes throughout Abia State, and his dedication continues to inspire future collaborations aimed at sustainable development in the field.
The World Sight Day event, observed globally each October, serves as a platform for stakeholders to discuss and promote strategies for better eye care. This year’s symposium in Abia State brought together key players in the sector to address local challenges and explore innovative solutions.

Gregory University Hosts NUC Accreditation Team for Hospitality and Tourism Management

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Cele Njoku, along with some members of the management staff, and Director of Academic planning, received the NUC accreditation team for Hospitality and Tourism Management during their two-day visit to the university for the accreditation exercise of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
The NUC representatives included Professor Tobira Levee, Professor Eja, and Oluchi Aluchaogu.
During their tour of the university particularly the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management on Wednesday, 15th October, and Thursday, 16th October, the team inspected the quality of ongoing work, reviewed available facilities, and assessed their alignment with best practices and standards for quality education.
Hospitality and Tourism Management is one of the many courses offered at Gregory University, Uturu, under the College of Social and Management Sciences.

Gregory University Celebrates Excellence at 2025 SWEP Closing Ceremony

Gregory University Uturu, on Thursday 9th October 2025, held the closing ceremony of the 2025 Scholars’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP) at the Izima Chamber, marking the end of five weeks of intensive practical training by students across various departments.
The event which had in attendance Lecturers, scholars, and other members of staff featured presentations, awards, and recognitions of outstanding participants and departments for their exceptional performance during the programme.
The Director of SWEP, Dr. Chigoziri Akudo, appreciated the efforts of both staff and scholars during the programme, noting that 134 successfully completed the SWEP programme.
Dr Akudo advised scholars to fully utilize their skills and prepare for more work ahead.
Students from various departments made engaging presentations that reflected what they had learnt during the training period.
Certificates were presented to all participants, after which the SIWES Director’s award segment followed. The Department of Chemical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering jointly emerged as the best performing department, followed by Anatomy in second place, while Civil Engineering came third.

Gregory University Uturu Holds First Radiography Induction

Gregory University, Uturu has held its first Radiography Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony, celebrating the pioneer graduands of the Department of Radiography.

The historic event which took place at Izima Council Chambers of Gregory University on Wednesday, 13th August 2025 brought together professionals and distinguished personalities in the field of Radiography.

Administering the oath, the Registrar of the Medical Rehabilitation Radiography Board of Nigeria (RRBN), Professor Mark Chukwudi Okeji, who was represented by Dr. Macauly Chukwudi Ejimofor, commended the institution for being one of the four private universities in Nigeria offering Radiography with full NUC accreditation.

He further encouraged the inductees, as pioneer graduands, to carry the double honour and responsibility of upholding the standards of the profession and keep the flag flying.

In her opening address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cele Njoku, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Regina Ogali, urged the inductees to go beyond mere practice and strive to become professionals who positively influence the lives of their patients, and others in the society.

Delivering the induction lecture titled “Shaping the Future of Radiography and Shining with Purpose”, the Guest Speaker, Elder Ini Ekanem, emphasized that Radiography practice is broad and multifaceted. He encouraged the inductees to become technical stewards and policy advocates in order to evolve into global professionals.

Elder Ekanem further urged the inductees to jealously guard their profession, develop the drive to advance their skills, and become role models for others.

In his valedictory speech, the best graduand, Ogiribo O. Glory, remarked, “It wasn’t easy at first, but I fought battles.” He promised never to bring shame to his parents or the university. He expressed deep gratitude to God for bringing them this far and appreciated the lecturers for the guidance throughout their academic journey.

Gregory University Celebrates Visionary Leader And Pioneer BOT Chairman in Style

The entire community of Gregory University Uturu (GUU) was filled with excitement and honour as the institution played host to the former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) and pioneer Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of GUU, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa.
In a historic visit to the university on 22nd August 2025, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, accompanied by his wife, commended the institution for its aggressive and commendable growth evident in the establishment and successful running of programme such as Law, Pharmacy, Medicine and Surgery, Engineering, among others.
Mazi Sam also congratulated the university for its unique approach to entrepreneurial studies, emphasizing that scholars graduate not just as certificate holders, but as potential employers of labour thanks to the entrepreneurial skills they acquire during their studies.
He thanked the university for the warm reception and reaffirmed his commitment to continually support initiatives that promote learning, research, and innovation. He further advised scholars to have a purpose, make a plan, work hard, and persevere in order to reach the apex of their careers and life goals.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Cele Njoku, in her address, expressed profound gratitude to Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa for his unwavering support towards the academic and infrastructural development of the institution and the nation at large. She described him as a visionary leader and a true friend of education.
Adding glamour to the occasion, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa and his entourage were first guided to the College of Pharmacy for a tour of its facilities and ongoing infrastructural projects. They expressed delight in the achievements of the founder, Prof. Greg Ibe, especially in leadership, philanthropy, and academic excellence.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts by both the university management and the pharmacy scholars to the renowned pharmacist, in appreciation of his enduring legacy and ongoing support.

Gregory University Makes Waves at the Nigerian Private University Games (NPUGA) 2025

Away from the classroom, it’s a moment of excitement and sportsmanship as Gregory University Uturu (GUU), joins other private universities from across the nation for the 8th Nigerian Private University Games Association (NPUGA) 2025 competition, at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State.
Gregory University continues to make a strong impression at the games, scoring two record-breaking goals within the first five minutes of their football match against Venite University, who failed to score.
In basketball, Team Gregory advanced to the semifinals after an impressive victory over Achievers University, winning with a score of 23 to 14.
The university also celebrated success in table tennis. In the male’s singles category, George Ike, a 300-level Physiotherapy student and Director of Socials in the GUU Student Union Government (SUG), secured a win for Gregory University against David from Adeleke University.
George later competed in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 14th, facing the No. 1 player from last year’s NPUGA tournament, representing Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU). Gregory University’s journey in the table tennis competition ended at this stage.
Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), is actively participating in volleyball, football (male and female), basketball, and tennis. The team is excited to be part of this event, which offers them the opportunity to exchange ideas and share in the spirit of sportsmanship with representatives from 24 participating universities.
Earlier, in his welcome address at the opening ceremony, the NPUGA President, Dr. Diyaolu Babajide, expressed appreciation to the participating schools and the entire NPUGA team for their efforts in making this year’s games a success. He emphasized that NPUGA is more than just a sporting event; it is a movement that fosters unity across faiths and cultures.
Dr. Babajide encouraged everyone to make excellence a habit in all areas, stressing that if NPUGA is to thrive, it must be adequately supported. He noted that starving the process of necessary resources may hinder the level of excellence the games aim to achieve.
On day seven of NPUGA 2025, the GUU male football team scored 4 goals in their football match against Adeleke University. The GUU football and basketball teams remain focused on the trophy, as they are set to deliver outstanding performances.
