Gregory University Uturu Joins Association of Medical Schools in Africa, Advancing Medical Excellence

Gregory University Uturu (GUU) is excited to announce that its College of Medicine and Health Sciences is now officially registered as a member of the Association of Medical Schools in Africa (AMSA).

This development reflects the institution’s commitment to excellence in medicine, as well as in other fields, and highlights our continued efforts to improve healthcare systems.

Additionally, the Provost, Prof. S.A.U. Offiah, has been formally invited to attend the 2025 AMSA Annual Conference, which will be hosted by the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in September 2025.

The conference will provide a platform for the college to engage with other top medical schools in Africa and collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing medical education and healthcare across the region.

Achieving AMSA membership is the result of a thorough evaluation and confirmation of full accreditation by the Council of Medical Schools in Africa. Furthermore, the GUU College of Medicine and Health Sciences met rigorous criteria in areas such as curriculum content, training modules, and alignment with the medical needs of Sub-Saharan Africa.

As a member of AMSA, our College of Medicine and Health Sciences will enjoy several benefits, including:

– Promotion of evidence-based healthcare practices and informed decision-making

– Strengthening of medical schools to elevate standards and ensure sustainability

– Support for exchange visits between medical educators and students from member schools and countries

– Advancement of equity and social responsiveness in medical education and healthcare

– Access to a network of leading medical schools across Africa, fostering the exchange of teaching, research, and evaluation resources

Recall that in September 2024, the Primary Medical Qualification (PMQ) awarded by the Gregory University Uturu College of Medicine and Health Sciences met the General Medical Council’s (GMC) criteria for an acceptable overseas qualification. This means that our scholars can now apply to sit the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) Test and pursue GMC registration with ease.

This is yet another feather in our cap, underscoring the importance of excellence and hard work.

Congratulations to our team at the Medical College, the management staff, and all members of the GUU community.
