Away from the classroom, it’s a moment of excitement and sportsmanship as Gregory University Uturu (GUU), joins other private universities from across the nation for the 8th Nigerian Private University Games Association (NPUGA) 2025 competition, at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State.
Gregory University continues to make a strong impression at the games, scoring two record-breaking goals within the first five minutes of their football match against Venite University, who failed to score.
In basketball, Team Gregory advanced to the semifinals after an impressive victory over Achievers University, winning with a score of 23 to 14.
The university also celebrated success in table tennis. In the male’s singles category, George Ike, a 300-level Physiotherapy student and Director of Socials in the GUU Student Union Government (SUG), secured a win for Gregory University against David from Adeleke University.
George later competed in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 14th, facing the No. 1 player from last year’s NPUGA tournament, representing Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU). Gregory University’s journey in the table tennis competition ended at this stage.
Gregory University, Uturu (GUU), is actively participating in volleyball, football (male and female), basketball, and tennis. The team is excited to be part of this event, which offers them the opportunity to exchange ideas and share in the spirit of sportsmanship with representatives from 24 participating universities.
Earlier, in his welcome address at the opening ceremony, the NPUGA President, Dr. Diyaolu Babajide, expressed appreciation to the participating schools and the entire NPUGA team for their efforts in making this year’s games a success. He emphasized that NPUGA is more than just a sporting event; it is a movement that fosters unity across faiths and cultures.
Dr. Babajide encouraged everyone to make excellence a habit in all areas, stressing that if NPUGA is to thrive, it must be adequately supported. He noted that starving the process of necessary resources may hinder the level of excellence the games aim to achieve.
On day seven of NPUGA 2025, the GUU male football team scored 4 goals in their football match against Adeleke University. The GUU football and basketball teams remain focused on the trophy, as they are set to deliver outstanding performances.
