As efforts to control and eradicate sickle cell anemia gains momentum, the Vice Chancellor, Gregory University Uturu, Professor Augustine Uwakwe has warned Nigerian youths against contracting marriages with people identified with sickle cell traits.
Professor Uwakwe who gave this warning while delivering the institution’s maiden public lecture titled “Managing Sickle Cell Disease: The Natural Alternatives, at the Goodluck Jonathan Auditorium, Gregory University Uturu, enjoined youths born with the AS genotype to avoid partners with similar genotypes, stressing that their pairing may be disastrous.Highlighting some of the major symptoms of the hereditary disease, the microbiology expert encouraged people to adopt natural and preventive approach, rather than curative measures in dealing with the endemic disease.
The fifty-four page thoroughly researched lecture highlighted some natural techniques for preventing the disease, while emphasising that victims of the ailment in the West African region, where the disease is most prevalent, have benefitted from these safe orthodox methods for a long time.
It was a well-attended lecture that recorded massive turnout of academicians and scholars from the university and other institutions of higher learning. Journalists that covered the lecture reported that the impact of the academic exercise began to be felt almost immediately as Anambra state government was said to have announced the official ban of marriages between carriers of the sickle cell gene.
