ABIA WOMEN HONOURS PROFESSOR IBE
The Nigeria Council of Women Society, Abia State chapter have honoured the founder / Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu, Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, at their convection held at Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.
In her speech, President General of the women, Mrs Nwaigwe, said that they choose to honour Professor Ibe because of his passion and love for the country and abia State in particular. “We witnessed your intervention during the lock down caused the dreaded covid-19 pandemic, women were the most affected, I say this, because we bear the burden of both our children as well as our husbands. So your palliatives saved lives, marriages and prevented a whole lot of criminal activities that would have happened then. We, therefore, after considering all these your life saving philanthropic actions coupled with your contribution to the general physical and human development of Abia State, concluded that you deserve the highest award from we, the mothers”, she maintained.
Responding, the Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu, Professor Gregory Ibe, while thanking the women for the award, stressed that their action will motivate him to do more.
Professor Ibe who was represented Chairman Abia Crusaders Forum, Prince Emeka Okafor, said that the award will spour him to do more, “like you pointed out, he was in the United States of America when we had the lock down, but because of his concern for Abians, he approved the distribution of palliative not just to support the state government but he also gave directly to the people. He did all this to ensure that Abians do not suffer”, he stressed.
It will be recalled that Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe was the first to provide palliatives during the lockdown that cripled the economy of world and put a lot of people in Nigeria particularly in Abia State into a precarious situation that nearly snowballed into crisis.
Professor Ibe, is today the highest employer of labour outside the state government. His siting of Gregory University in Amaokwe Uturu, has brought unprecedented development to the area. His 1000 bed capacity teaching hospital located at Ezinnachi has been described as phenomenon that will transform the health sector in the entire South East and South South.
Gregory Ibe, did not stop at that, he built and energized a 33/11 5mva electricity sub station at Abia State University Uturu, solving the over 6 years power problem in Uturu. He also drilled a borehole and reticulated the water from 4 kilometers into the surrounding villages easing the perenial water problem of the area.
